Mr. Tommy Poynter

Tommy Poynter, an experienced football coach and role model to young men and women, accepted the position as Athletic Director/Head Football Coach for Wills Point ISD.  Poynter was approved by the WPISD Board of Trustees on May 20, 2020, in a special board meeting. 

Poynter and his family come to Wills Point from his most recent stop in Denton, where Poynter served as a teacher at the International Baccalaureate Campus, Offensive Coordinator, and College Recruiting Coordinator. Coach Poynter has a spread of coaching and teaching experience, including serving as a Graduate Assistant and Offensive Line Coach at his alma mater, Southern Methodist University, contributing to the 2012 Hawaii Bowl Championship. He has also served as Strength Coordinator, Defensive Line Coach, Running Game Coordinator, Track Assistant, Soccer Assistant, Basketball Assistant, and Wrestling Assistant. 

Coach Poynter is not a man only focused on football. He holds academics to a high standard.  Poynter has earned a Bachelors in Business Administration, Masters in Accounting, and Masters in Educational Leadership, all from Southern Methodist University. He holds teaching certifications in Math, Social Studies Composite, Business, and Health Education. 

Tommy is married to Emily Poynter, a nurse and former college athlete, and they are raising three young children, the oldest to begin Kindergarten this fall.  Tommy serves his family and the community as a Lead Clinician for Fellowship of Christian Athletes Sports Camp at Texas A&M University.  He speaks to student athletes using coaching and playing experiences to inspire and motivate all students. He and Emily both volunteer for FCA camps and lead huddles to build student-athlete character. Poynter is a American Football Coaches Association Committee Member, Texas High School Coaches Association Member, USAW-1 Certification. ATAVUS Tackling Certification. 3Dimension+ Certification, and he is also an Eagle Scout. 

Wills Point ISD feels greatly blessed by the opportunity to have Coach Poynter leading our Athletic Program.  We know he is joining a group of coaches who keep the student-athlete’s academic, athletic, and character development a top priority.

  • There will be NO Summer T.I.G.E.R. the week of July 6th. We plan to resume summer workouts July 13th from 7-9 am. The remaining dates for Summer T.I.G.E.R. are as follows: 

    July 13, 14, 15, 16, 22, 23
