Dr. Scott Venters - Theatre Arts and Dual Credit Theatre Appreciation
Scott received his BFA in Drama from the University of Oklahoma, a BA in English and Philosophy from CUNY-Hunter College, an MA in Theatre Arts from Oklahoma State University, and has recently received his PhD in Theatre History, Theory, and Criticism from the School of Drama at the University of Washington, Seattle. He has worked as a SAG-AFTRA-EQUITY actor in Los Angeles, Dallas, and New York, and is former artistic director of a Brooklyn-based non-profit theatre arts collective.
Scott is an incredibly hard working, enthusiastic, but sometimes sleep-deprived theatre teacher/director, and is very excited to be working with the young theatre aficianados and parents of Wills Point. One tenet of his teaching/working philosophy is that we are more creative and more effective problem solvers as a collaborative unit. WPHS theatre productions are never imposed top-down but rather generated through mutual participation and the convergence of sometimes radically different ideas. We continue to face a lot of challenges this year but Scott has big plans such as the following: 1. mounting a full production season full of instructor and student-led events utilizing two performance spaces; 2. developing a mentorship program for junior high students and high school freshmen; 3. creating professionalization tracks with checkpoints or milestones; 4. offering students more control and autonomy with officer, program, and facilities responsibilities; 5. promoting the student viewing and analysis of professional and collegiate theatre in their various iterations.
